What to expect? 

Face-to-face delivery: classroom-based morning session followed by practical vineyard training in the afternoon

Day 1 – Key learning objective: To develop skills in seasonal vineyard canopy management throughout the growing season

Day 2 - Key learning objective - To develop an advanced understanding of how canopy management influences vine balance, yield, and grape quality, and to apply techniques that optimise fruit composition and vineyard performance.

 

Who is this workshop for? 

Day 1 - New to intermediate vineyard staff seeking practical, hands-on training in seasonal canopy management.

Day 2 - Intermediate to advanced vineyard staff, vineyard managers, and those who have completed Day 1 training seeking to deepen technical canopy management knowledge.

 

What does the workshop include?

Day 1 – Learning objectives 

  • Understand the key principles of seasonal vineyard canopy management and their role in vine performance
  • Explain vine growth stages and canopy management objectives through the growing season
  • Apply practical vineyard techniques including Bud-rubbing and shoot selection, tucking-in and wire lifting
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of trimming and basic leaf removal
  • Identify the appropriate timing of canopy interventions to support vine health and yield
  • Building confidence and competence in carrying out canopy management tasks

Day 2 – Learning objectives

  • Understand and evaluate vine balance, vigour, and overall canopy performance
  • Apply advanced canopy techniques through practical exercises
  • Evaluate canopy density, structure, and fruit-to-leaf ratios
  • Understand light interception, shading, and microclimate effects
  • Evaluate the impact of canopy management on fruit ripening, yield, and wine quality
  • Make informed decisions on the timing and intensity of canopy interventions based on site and season
  • Critically assess the outcomes of different canopy management strategies

Tutors  

Rob Poyser – Vinescapes

RobRob is a viticulturist at Vinescapes, where he manages client vineyards and supports growers from site preparation through to harvest. His role covers all aspects of vineyard management, including overseeing viticultural operations and machinery, with a focus on delivering high-quality fruit and sustainable yields for premium winemaking.

Rob has worked in the wine industry since 2012, beginning his career with fine wine merchants in London before gaining a first-class degree in Viticulture & Oenology. 

He brings a practical, ecological and data-driven approach to viticulture, with a strong commitment to regenerative practices that promote healthy, resilient vines and vineyards rooted in their natural landscape.

Rob was awarded the WineGB Sustainability in Viticulture Award in 2024.
