CALL FOR DECARBONISATION R&D PROJECTS
The Welsh Government’s EU funded SMART Cymru programme is offering eligible businesses the chance to apply for a new SMART Cymru Decarbonisation grant. It offers eligible businesses a non-repayable grant of up to £50,000 to contribute towards exploring the feasibility of decarbonisation ideas.
If your business has:
At least 10 employees
An idea to reduce or remove carbon from products, processes or technologies
You could be eligible for non-repayable funding of up to £50,000 now.
*Other eligibility criteria apply
Who can apply for the funding?
Applications are open to businesses who want to run a feasibility study to investigate the viability of transforming innovative decarbonisation ideas into new products, processes or services.
What can the funding be used for?
SMART Innovation is specifically looking for innovative ideas that aim to:
- reduce the carbon intensity of the primary energy used by a product, process, service or activity OR
- reduce the carbon impact of consumption and/or the sequestration or use of carbon by the product, process, service or activity.
The funding can cover up to 70% of feasibility costs and can only be used for revenue, not capital costs.
This funding is supported by the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund*. The maximum grant is £50,000 and it is completely non-repayable.
Why are only projects that are looking to reduce carbon eligible?
The Environment (Wales) Act 2016 requires the Welsh Government to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in Wales by at least 80% by the year 2050.
But it’s about more than meeting a target: reducing Wales’ carbon footprint will benefit our people, our natural environment and our economy.
With the low carbon economy predicted to grow by around 11% per year to 2030 – four times faster than the average growth rate for the UK economy as a whole – it is an exciting space for businesses looking to futureproof their operations or explore innovative new products or services.
If you have an innovative idea to make something new, better or faster, which isn’t linked to decarbonisation, please visit our main SMART Innovation pages to access specialist innovation support and expertise.
Why is financial support being offered?
Businesses in Wales have a huge part to play in helping us to become a low-carbon nation, but we understand that not all businesses have the time or money required to invest in R&D.
With up to 70% of costs covered by the new funding, we offer businesses a low-risk and low-cost way to test decarbonisation ideas and concepts.
However, financial support from SMART Cymru is only part of the offer from SMART Innovation. Its team of Innovation Specialists is made up of engineers, scientists, IP experts and commercialisation managers. With decades of industry expertise, they can be on hand as much, or as little, as you need.
Will I have to repay the money if the idea does not progress into development?
No, the funding is non-repayable. We have provided innovation support to businesses for decades and our aim is to help businesses either move closer towards realising their ideas, or be able to confidently discount them, and not keep wondering – what if?
If the feasibility study proves an idea or concept is worth pursuing, further support is available for the future R&D stages of industrial research and experimental development, to continue with driving that innovation forward.
Am I eligible?
- Business must have at least 10 employees (in limited instances, business with less than 10 employees may be considered but these will need to be able to demonstrate tangible growth potential, e.g. by being on the Accelerated Growth Programme)
- Proposed feasibility studies must be aligned to a 'Decarbonisation' R&D project.
