Project Description

A pilot project to see if this non-statutory but highly valued service can be delivered on a mobile basis without the significant capital and revenue investment required for a fixed, permanent site.

The outcomes of the project are expected to be:

  • Increase in percentage of Conwy residents live within 20 minutes’ drive of HRC service.
  • Increase in tonnage of household waste reused from rural areas
  • Increase in tonnage of household waste recycled from rural areas
  • Reduced number of fly-tipping incidents in rural areas
  • Establishment of community focal points for delivery of other Council services/functions
  • Promotion of local community options for reuse/recycling

What was the result of your project?

Conwy County Borough Council’s Waste Management section has teamed up with Conwy Cynhaliol Rural Development Project to offer the rural residents of Conwy a pilot of a mobile recycling service.

With some residents having to make a 50 mile round trip to their nearest recycling depot, Conwy Cynhaliol’s Local Action Group (LAG) approved a project to trial running a mobile recycling service for the residents of Rural Conwy.

The service will be located at three locations across the rural area – Cerrigydrudion on the first Saturday of every month, Glasdir, Llanrwst on the second Saturday of every month and then Llangernyw on the third Saturday of every month.

Household waste such as furniture, hard plastic and electrical items will all be accepted at the recycling centres as well as garden waste and recyclable waste. DIY or construction waste such as rubble, soil or wood will not be accepted.

Cllr Goronwy Edwards, chair of the LAG said, “Our rural residents are having to travel to either Mochdre or Abergele if they have any bulky items they need to get rid of. For some of our residents, that can mean more than a 50 mile round trip. The main aims of this trial is to encourage more people to recycle responsibly and to alleviate fly tipping in the rural areas where it is an increasing problem”.

The two and a half year trial is due to start on Saturday the 6th of October in Cerrigydrudion.

Biggest challenges and/or lessons learnt during the project

Jim Espley, Waste Manager for Conwy County Borough Council said,

“We hope that this pilot project shows that our highly valued recycling services can be delivered on a mobile basis. This will help us make decisions about whether a mobile service is a long-term and sustainable option to make sure we are covering the whole region.”
