At birth, the calf’s digestive system is underdeveloped, and the rumen is nonfunctional, with milk being digested in the abomasum. Gradually, as the calf begins to ingest solid feed, the rumen develops structurally and functionally. The transition from a liquid to solid food stimulates the rumen to develop its microbial population, which is essential for the fermentation of fibrous feeds. This microbiome is critical for the digestion of cellulose, a component of plant fibre, which cannot be broken down by the calf’s own enzymes.
