Pig Nutrition, Feed Efficiency and Alternative Feeds

The pork industry in Wales is small, especially compared to sheep and cattle, but remains steady at around 23,000 pigs. The Welsh pork industry is generally composed of a larger number of small herds that are less intensively farmed but produce top-quality meat. Given that feed costs can account for 60-75% of the total cost of rearing pork, producers may be looking at ways of improving feed efficiency or for alternative feeds, particularly waste products that would improve the sustainability of the operation.
