Thomas Richards is a Level 3 Agricultural Engineering student at Coleg Sir Gâr, Gelli Aur, based in Mid Wales, where he combines academic study with practical experience on his family’s mixed sheep and beef farm. He is actively involved in the day-to-day running of the business, contributing to livestock management and developing an understanding of the challenges facing modern family farms.
Thomas has developed a strong interest in agricultural machinery and engineering, supported by work experience with Ffynon Tractors, where he assisted mechanics and strengthened his practical problem-solving and technical skills. His commitment to his studies has been recognised through the Gwili Jones Memorial Cup award for Best Agricultural Engineering Student.
Alongside college and farm work, Thomas is an active member of Beulah Young Farmers Club, where he contributes to community events, fundraising and local initiatives. Outside of agriculture, he enjoys rugby and spending time outdoors.
Looking ahead, Thomas aims to progress into higher education before returning to develop the family farm into a sustainable and resilient business. Through the Junior Academy, he is keen to broaden his knowledge, explore new systems and build networks that will support his future career in agriculture.
