Weaning is a critical stage in a calf's life, marking the transition from a milk-based diet to solid feed, which supports further growth and development. Successful calf weaning is essential for promoting healthy rumen development, achieving healthy and productive animals and ensuring animal welfare.

The rumen plays a key role in digesting fibrous plant material. It undergoes significant changes during the early stages of a calf’s life, and its development is closely linked to the process of weaning.

At birth, the calf’s digestive system is underdeveloped, and the rumen is nonfunctional, with milk being digested in the abomasum. Gradually, as the calf begins to ingest solid feed, the rumen develops structurally and functionally. The transition from a liquid to solid food stimulates the rumen to develop its microbial population, which is essential for the fermentation of fibrous feeds. This microbiome is critical for the digestion of cellulose, a component of plant fibre, which cannot be broken down by the calf’s own enzymes.
