Abergavenny Lido feasibility study

The Lido Group’s ultimate goal is to bring a heated outdoor pool back to Bailey Park, Abergavenny. This application is for funds to finance a feasibility study with the aim of ensuring that the pool is both viable and sustainable. The original pool, which opened in 1939, fell into disuse in the 1990s and was pulled down in 2006. It is hoped the new Abergavenny Lido will tap into the recent massive resurgence of interest in outdoor and wild swimming.

Swimming is a suitable exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels, and the benefits also extend to mental health. Older people and anyone with physical/mental health issues will benefit from the new pool. For many swimmers, there's an important social element to swimming – it is a means of combating loneliness, age-related cognitive decline, depression and anxiety. It will give children and young people opportunities to make friends and have fun learning to swim. It will also appeal to athletes who need to train for competitions and events.

This is an exciting, innovative project for the Vale of Usk region. Although there are many lidos throughout the UK, Wales falls short. Only Lido-Ponty has returned to use in recent times. The Abergavenny Lido will be a cultural and recreational asset, which could offer a unique leisure experience, not only for the people of Monmouthshire but for the whole of South East Wales and further afield.

The lido will bring substantial economic benefits to the area in terms of supply chain contracts and increased footfall for local hospitality and retail businesses. It is likely that a number of jobs will be created at the pool including a management team, ticket sellers, lifeguards, café staff and cleaners. Some of these could be voluntary or work experience roles. The final report will be shared, and it is anticipated that it will be of great benefit to individuals and groups in other areas with similar aspirations in terms of outdoor swimming facilities.
