Feasibility study on Squill Production in North Wales

White squill (Drima Maritima) is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. Squill contains several steroid glycosides (Bufadienolides) which are key compounds in many anti-cough syrups.

The 18-month project proposes to trial the growing of Squill on North Wales farms. The aim is to establish the demands of the plant including agronomy, harvesting and extraction techniques and their costs of growing the plant in Wales.

If results are positive, it is possible that growing Squill could be a diversification option for some farmers who are currently struggling with the challenges of the beef and sheep sector. Welsh grown could replace the current production supply from overseas.
