Project description:

Resident’s were concerned that Rodney’s Pillar, a Grade II* Listed Monument, was deteriorating and starting to ‘bulge’

What will the project achieve?

The Feasibility Study looked into the history of the Pillar and has raised awareness.

It is hoped that in the future extra interpretation boards will be added plus leaflets made which explain the history.

Who are the project beneficiaries?

Communities of Ceredigion.

Challenge

Ownership of the Pillar was not clear - the last repair had been done by the Gentlemen of Montgomeryshire.

Statutory bodies such as CADW and Powys County Council would not accept any responsibility and neither would the landowner as the ground that the Pillar stands on had been gifted .

Solution

Three neighbouring Community Councils decided to join forces and secured a grant from ARWAIN for a Feasibility Study to be carried out which would look at the ownership and suggest possible solutions. Match funding was agreed by the Community Councils which paid for a drone & structural survey of the Pillar.

What was the result of your project?

The Feasibility Study has shown that ownership cannot be established without a lot of legal work. A ‘Friends of Rodney’s Pillar Group could be formed which could fundraise for the money needed.
