Keep Wales Tidy clean up event

A joint litter picking event organised by PHR Plumbing Heating & Renewables and Skeffington Properties Limited, saw over 40 volunteers from the local area in Rhyl brave the wind and rain in the name of cleaning up their local community.

As the weather improves and public areas start to reopen, rates of litter have increased over the last year in Wales. These two local companies, seeing this increase in local littering to open spaces and beaches, sought to team up for the first time to tackle the issue head on organising a group litter pick and family day for participating volunteers of all ages.

Due to higher interest than anticipated for volunteers, locations were expanded to include Brickfield Pond & surrounding areas, Marine Lake, Glan Morfa Nature Reserve, Botanical Gardens & Splash Point.

Over 40 volunteers took part on the day with staff from both companies, grandparents and children all pitching in, with volunteers heading over to Tan Y Bryn Farm for a Family Day to celebrate a job well done. Two children were also awarded a joint trophy for best litter pickers of the day, going above and beyond, picking litter and waste from harder to reach areas.

PHR Plumbing Heating & Renewables and Skeffington Properties Limited worked with Keep Wales Tidy as part of their Caru Cymru initiative to source equipment for this event, including high vis vests, litter pickers, rubbish bags and hoops.

A Welsh phrase meaning ‘Love Wales’, Caru Cymru aims to inspire everyone to take action and care for the environment. Keep Wales Tidy is working with all local authorities across Wales and this is their biggest ever initiative to eradicate litter and waste.

Caru Cymru has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

“We as a company working in the local area, see how untidy the community can become during high season. We feel passionate about keeping the area clean so that we can now enjoy the outdoor space that we haven’t been able to enjoy properly during the pandemic. We have also teamed up with the Homeless prevention team who are bringing some of the young adults aged 16-24 to help in cleaning up the community. We would like to thank Keep Wales Tidy, who have provided us with the tools to go ahead with this organised event”
