What to expect from mentoring and is it for me?
This section explains the benefits of joining the mentoring programme and answers the most common questions people have.
Is there a cost for a mentor?
No. Business Wales Mentors volunteer their time to support Welsh Businesses.
How do I decide if mentoring is right for me and my business?
I am struggling in specific areas of my business and think I would benefit from specialist advice. Will a mentor help with this?
It is important to remember that business mentors are not consultants or specialist advisers. They will not offer business advice.
If you require business advice or specialist support, then please reach out to Business Wales via our ‘contact us’ option.

What Can a Business Mentor Offer You?
A business mentor provides a supportive, non-judgmental space to help you grow personally and professionally. Rather than giving direct answers, your mentor will:
- Encourage independent problem-solving by helping you explore a range of options and consider alternative approaches.
- Support your personal development by helping you build new skills, gain fresh insights, and expand your knowledge.
- Enhance your mindset and performance by guiding you to adopt new attitudes and behaviours that benefit both you and your business.
- Empower your decision-making by helping you tap into your own resourcefulness — mentoring is about offering perspective, not prescribing solutions.
Who Will Your Mentor Be?
Your mentor will be an experienced business professional with the insight and understanding to support your journey. Once you register with the Business Wales Mentoring service, one of our dedicated mentoring coordinators will be in touch to match you with a mentor.
When will I speak to my mentor?
After the mentoring coordinator has matched you with a mentor the coordinator will let you know and arrange a mutually convenient time for both parties to get in touch.
How often will I have contact with my mentor?
It is up to you and your individual mentor to agree what works best for both of you. Please bear in mind that our mentors work on a voluntary basis.
How long will my mentoring relationship last?
We typically recommend that your relationship will last for between 6 and 12 months.
The length of the relationship is different for everyone, and will be agreed between you, your mentor and your mentoring coordinator.
