4G Router Pilot

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic there is much more reliance on digital connectivity as more people work from home and access other online services. However, there are some properties within Ceredigion without access to fast, reliable broadband.

To help those in most need of a more reliable broadband connection during the current situation, Ceredigion County Council, in collaboration with Welsh Government, are trialling the provision of 4G routers. The routers can be used inside, or outdoors for areas with poor signal strength, and can be deployed relatively quickly. As part of this trial Ceredigion County Council have access to several routers, depending on need, for suitable individuals and properties that can be identified.

The equipment will be ‘on loan’ for an initial three months and will be returned following the individuals return to their usual place of work. Following this project, an evaluation of 4G routers effectiveness will be completed and a decision will be made to undertake a similar intervention on a larger scale. It is felt that the project will be valuable to the Council in determining if such technology can be used as an alternative for those premises not currently receiving fast broadband speeds and where the installation of fibre is not possible in providing Superfast Broadband.
