e-Crime generally refers to a criminal activity where a computer or computer network is the source, tool, target, or place of a crime. Despite the inevitable references to ‘computers’ or ‘online activity’, e-Crime nevertheless encompasses a whole raft of ‘traditional’ crimes - such as fraud, theft, blackmail, forgery and embezzlement.

Impact

The impact of e-Crime can be wide reaching. If a business has their website hacked, malicious messages could be sent out to customers and clients causing damage to working relationships. If a business bank account is hacked, customers bank details may be at risk meaning the impact could reach valued customers.  

Prevention

To avoid internal hacking, restrict employee’s access to sensitive areas of the computer network. Implement a thorough IT security policy. Ensure that your PC has anti-virus software and a firewall. Make sure passwords are kept safe and secure and aren’t easily guessed.
