Vandalism
Vandalism is defined as the deliberate destruction of or damage to public and private property. With business premises, one of the most common forms of vandalism is smashed windows and graffiti.
Impact
Though this does have implications for the business, such as cost of cleaning and replacing windows, it also has a wider impact on the community. The Broken Window Theory proposes the idea that vandals break a few windows which aren’t mended, and then they break a few more. Then they burgle the premises. This could then spiral to squatting.
Prevention
By investing in double glazing and anti-vandalism paint, businesses can curb these crimes. They could also change their attitudes to these crimes. Graffiti, though unsightly, might not be seen as a huge issue for businesses as it doesn’t necessarily affect their business directly, but it should be taken seriously to avoid further problems.
Report it
Call your local Police on 101. However, in an emergency always use 999. 101 is the number to call if, for example:
- a vehicle has been stolen
- property has been damaged
- you’re giving information about other crime
The number can be used to report a non-emergency to any Police Force in Wales. Calls to 101 from landlines and mobile networks cost 15p per call, no matter what time of day you call or how long you are on the phone.
In an emergency, always dial 999. This is when immediate action is required, such as:
- a crime is in progress
- someone suspected of a crime is near by
- someone’s life is at risk
- someone is injured
- there is violence being used or threatened
