Two independent Welsh producers have joined forces to create Y Fenai, a distinctive rum-infused coffee that brings together award-winning rum, expertly roasted speciality coffee and original Welsh artwork in one unique product.
The partnership was sparked through introductions made at Cluster Network events. Funded by Welsh Government, the network plays an important role in helping Welsh food and drink businesses build connections, share expertise and develop collaborative projects that support growth and innovation.
The collaboration between Llanfairpwll Distillery and Coffi Dre combines traditional distilling with artisan coffee roasting through a carefully developed process. Green coffee beans are first soaked in Skerries Dark Rum, recently awarded a one-star Great Taste Award 2026, before being returned to Coffi Dre for roasting.
During roasting, the alcohol is removed, leaving behind the rich flavour characteristics of the rum within the coffee beans.
The result is a beautifully balanced coffee with tasting notes of rich dark chocolate, roasted cocoa, caramel, molasses and vanilla, complemented by toasted nuts, gentle oak spice, hints of dried fruit and a smooth, lingering finish.
The name Y Fenai reflects the connection between the two producers and celebrates the iconic Menai Strait that has linked communities, trade and craftsmanship across North Wales for generations.
Rob Laming, Head Distiller at Llanfairpwll Distillery, said:
"This project started with a simple idea – could we capture the character of our Skerries Dark Rum within the coffee itself? Working with Coffi Dre has been a fantastic experience, and together we've created something that's completely unique. Having our Skerries Dark Rum recognised with a Great Taste Award this year makes this collaboration even more special."
A spokesperson for Coffi Dre added:
"From the outset we wanted Y Fenai to showcase quality and craftsmanship. The rum infusion brings incredible depth to the green beans, and our roasting process has been carefully developed to highlight those flavours while producing a beautifully balanced coffee. We're incredibly proud of the result."
Adding the finishing touch is the stunning original artwork created by Sian Angharad whose illustration perfectly captures the character and identity of Y Fenai, making the packaging every bit as distinctive as the coffee inside.
More than just a new product, Y Fenai celebrates collaboration between independent Welsh businesses, demonstrating how traditional skills, innovation and creativity can come together to produce something truly original.
Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability, Llyr Gruffydd said:
“Partnerships like this one between two independent Welsh producers demonstrate the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit that continue to drive Wales' food and drink industry forward.
“Collaborations forged through the Cluster Network, funded by Welsh Government, highlight how working together can create new opportunities, add value to local products and strengthen rural economies.
“It is inspiring to see businesses drawing on Welsh heritage, skills and creativity to produce something truly unique, and I am delighted to support the Cluster Network in enabling ventures like this one.”
