Tyn-Y-Capel Inn & Restaurant

Community owned business

  • Over 100 people have purchased community shares in the venture

  • 40% increase in revenue following the employment of a full-time manager

The Tyn-Y-Capel runs a successful community shareholder scheme. It operates a democratic structure with each shareholder having a vote on how the company is run. Since 2012, the enterprise has moved from one that was largely co-ordinated and run by volunteers, to being a paid employer in Minera, Wrexham. The company now employs eight core staff and 20 casual staff, all of whom live within a 2-mile radius of the pub. The pub was awarded the prestigious Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2015.

“Social Business Wales support has been crucial to the Tyn-y-Capel Inn and Restaurant. Specifically, the purchase of Preferential Shares to support start-up costs, a loan in the last 12 months to support business development, and the valued mentoring and advice from the Centre’s officers, especially in respect of HR.”
