Bearhug, a Pontypool-based business specialising in bamboo joint supports and muscle sleeves, has carved a niche in the sports injury and recovery market. Founded in 2016, Bearhug uses innovative bamboo technology, renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, to produce high-quality supports designed to help anyone, regardless of age or background move and recover from injury confidently.
Bearhug’s story is one of resilience and adaptability, highlighting the impact of strategic, tailored business support. Innovation and determination enabled the company to navigate financial challenges during the pandemic. With invaluable assistance from the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme (BWAGP), the Bearhug team revitalised their business and laid the foundation for future success.
Here, founder Rhys George shares the business story, including how they overcame challenges and his vision for the future.
How has the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme (BWAGP) supported Bearhug?
The support we’ve received through the programme has been transformational. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we faced unprecedented challenges threatening the business's future. Lockdowns drained our reserves, forcing us to take on debt for the first time through bounce-back loans.
Our Relationship Managers and coaches helped us restructure the company, optimise our website, and improve data capture to refine our branding and re-engage customers. Their coaching enabled us to navigate critical decisions, such as enhancing our online sales channels and planning fundraising strategies.
The results have been exceptional. Our revenue from online sales continues to rise, and collaborations with elite athletes and sports organisations have significantly improved brand awareness. The guidance from our Relationship Manager and expert coaches was crucial in helping us navigate a challenging period and emerge even stronger.
Tell us about the inspiration behind Bearhug.
Bearhug began from personal battles with long-standing injuries. My sports career ended at 19 after two serious knee injuries. Years later as my co-founders and I struggled with our own aches, we realised the market for joint supports hadn’t evolved in decades.
Determined to do better, we tapped into our own experiences to develop a unique product range in this space. Today, our range includes 12 bamboo-based products designed to improve blood flow, reduce inflammation and accelerate recovery. Sustainability is at the heart of our ethos ensuring our products benefit people and the planet.
What have been Bearhug’s key achievements in recent years?
The past two years have been pivotal. We raised £56,000 through a crowdfunding campaign, enabling us to double our product range and partner with organisations like the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).
A standout achievement was launching the ‘Lumbear,’ our innovative lower back support developed with WRU Physio John Miles and feedback from elite athletes. Trialled during the 2024 Six Nations campaign, demand for the prototypes far exceeded supply.
We’ve also expanded our team, hiring four new members and welcoming two young recruits through the Jobs Growth Wales scheme.
What challenges have you faced, and how did BWAGP help you overcome them?
The COVID-19 pandemic was our biggest challenge. Before 2020, Bearhug was self-funded through personal investments and a sister company. We had just achieved breakeven and were ready for growth when the lockdowns hit.
BWAGP’s support helped stabilise the business during this turbulent time. Their guidance on restructuring and optimising operations positioned us for long-term growth. Introducing improved data strategies and branding played a key role in re-engaging customers.
What is your proudest moment in business?
Our proudest moments come from seeing Bearhug products empower people to overcome injuries. Our commitment to sustainability and quality has resonated with our customers and helped build trust in our brand.
Also, growing our team has been deeply fulfilling. Seeing people believe in our vision and contribute to our journey is incredibly rewarding.
