Project Description:

Blending ancient and modern, Postcards and Podcasts will connect young people with their community and heritage. We will provide training in digital technologies, photography and film, promote our heritage and give young people the skills and professional portfolios to establish new enterprise and stimulate tourism. Funding will be used to establish a one year ‘seed’ project, which is part of a broader project concept supported by a diverse range of local organisations. This funding enables us to run the first year of our Postcards and Podcasts project to create new work for young people in our area that also nourishes the heritage and tourism upon which we depend. The first year is about building links with heritage organisations and other partners, creating a forum to develop a shared vision, developing digital skills and starting to build a global online presence for our area. The funding will support one young person into part-time employment as a Heritage Coordinator for our area to work with up to 30 local heritage organisations who support or are interested in our project. It will also fund 3 more young people as Heritage Ambassadors to work part-time directly with these organisations.

Project Outcomes:

Of the 30 local heritage organisations that originally supported the need for the project, the Project worked directly with 10 of these to help to publicise, protect and promote local heritage assets. The Project worked with 5 local individuals to promote cultural heritage and it provided young people with training in digital technologies and valuable work experience. The Project also aimed to address the need to promote Pembrokeshire to a wider audience, to encourage tourism and to sustain local business, by producing globally accessible digital content.

Some project highlights include, Pembroke Town Walls Trust engaging with the young web designer on the project to build a new website for them, a young film maker on the project has engaged two eminent Doctors of Archaeology to make a short film series with us in the near future and Pembroke Castle has asked us to produce digital content for their website.  Stakeholders include the National Theatre of Wales, Pembroke Castle, PLANED, Pembroke Town Hall, Welsh Assembly Government and Pembroke Heritage Forum;

Via social media the Project reached 3,702 people on Facebook and there have been 1,536 views of our videos.  The Tanyard Youth Project Ltd has its own web presence and currently has over 900 followers.

‘’Young people have learned technical skills in graphic design, film production and editing, post-production processes including creation of soundtrack, photography, website design, construction and maintenance, search engine optimisation, publishing on different platform’’

Lessons Learned:

The Project team tell us they would have planned the activities over a longer period of time and noted that their spend rate was slower than expected.
