To teach young people basic, practical cooking skills over a 10 week on-line programme, empowering them to plan, prepare and cook affordable nutritiously balanced meals for themselves and their families as part of a healthier lifestyle.
The project will provide opportunities for young people to develop and improve their literacy, numeracy, ICT and independent living skills, enabling them to lead healthier lives and achieve their full potential.
The project’s aims will be met through the achievement of the following objectives:
- Increased knowledge about food and health, providing an understanding of healthy eating, the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) Eatwell plate and weaning.
- Increased confidence around healthy eating. Opportunity to try new foods, follow/adapt recipes.
- Improved cooking skills.
- Changed behaviour to improve nutrition - encourage fewer takeaways/ready meals, changing cooking habits to reduce salt, fat or sugar, eat more fruit/vegetables.
- Supporting/improving physical health by understanding the need for a varied, balanced nutritional diet.
- Improved family relationships, improved communication/social skills and increased confidence.
- Supporting/improving mental health.
- Providing a safe, structured place for learning.
- Exploring budgeting.
- Providing weekly face to face visits from a youth work, social interaction and inclusion (dropping food packages off) enabling health and wellbeing checks to be discreetly made.
- Providing optional Food Hygiene Level 2 qualification.
