David Evans
During the 1970’s David studied Engineering and working for British Aerospace on a variety of projects for Concorde, environmental testing for a solar array for Intelsat IV and redundancy theory in respect of missile systems.
David found this sector although interesting slow progression, he moved to Sir M MacDonald and Partners for the next five years as an engineer, designs for irrigation schemes in Nigeria and Iraq. In 1982 for eight years David was project manager for Balfour Beatty Projects and Engineering.
In 1990 David moved to Hyder as Senior Project Manager, working on numerous schemes for Welsh Water AMP2 programme and Coppermills Ozonation Plant for Thames Water.
He was responsible in Dam and Hydropower Engineering working in Balanga and Shendam Dams in Nigeria, Kamburu Spillway remedial works in Kenya, Small Hydro schemes in Northern Thialand and Peru and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. For the next twenty-five years David worked for ARUP and retired this year as Associate Director.
He was brought into Arup to establish and develop the Water Business in Cardiff. He has succeeded; the size of the Group continues to increase and, importantly in this connection, has secured clients with whom we have remained. An example is that during my period of leadership, Arup are the only consultant to have retained a relationship with Morgan Sindall (working on behalf of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water) during AMP3, AMP4 and AMP5 – this was continuous, unbroken service to this client. In the course of this work, Arup delivered some of the more prestigious and innovative projects including the Cardiff East Control Strategy (a scheme originally budgeted at £100m to provide 100,000m3 of storage but delivered for only £3m) and the Advanced Digestion Plants at Cardiff, Afan and Eign Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW).
The directors at the Cardiff WwTW have been shortlisted for a BCI Award in 2011. David also speaks at conferences on Water Sensitive Urban Design. He is one of the leaders of ARUP contribution to the development of Hafren Power’s Seven Barage (25bn project) as one of the five main associations helping to assess the viability of a barrage along the Cardiff to Weston Line.
