Study into future development of Milford Waterfront

Project summary:

The Port of Milford Haven is a Trust Port.  As such it does not have shareholders and its profits are retained for re-investment into the business in support of its key objectives.  The Port sustains a nationally important portfolio of businesses engaged in the production and distribution of energy and energy fuels. This activity accounts for over 5,000 jobs in Wales and substantial continuous investment into the local economy.

In the interests of the local economy the Port is seeking to achieve greater diversity in the range of activities being undertaken.  This includes the redevelopment of the newly branded Milford Waterfront.

As part of the £115m plan for this, the Port needed to undertake a feasibility study to look at possibilities for the redevelopment of the semi-derelict, Grade II listed Quay Stores, located on Victoria Road at the entrance to Milford Waterfront.

The aim was to explore options that could attract major investment and provide a venue for use by the local community, as well as boosting local tourism.

Local stakeholders were consulted during the feasibility study to ascertain how the local community might use such a facility. The need for a multi-purpose flexible, 400-seat, auditorium space was identified, supported by a food and drink offer.  This would help attract top entertainment acts to the County, as well as providing a space for both commercial and community use for a diverse range of events and activities.

Allied to this, since there was an underspend on the initial feasibility study, Arwain Sir Benfro agreed that the remaining funds could be spent on a second study to look at options for an ‘East-West link’ which has the potential to resolve the disconnect between the town centre and Waterfront, that results from the local topography – there is a very steep incline between the two locations.   A range of options were scoped in the study, including a funicular, a glass elevator and an escalator with stairway alongside.

MHPA are grateful that LEADER funding has enabled them to produce these studies, which will now support their applications for grant funding to develop both the Quay Stores site and the link with the town centre.  LEADER funding has contributed to the overall Waterfront vision, which aims to develop a stronger connection between the two areas and regenerate the town as a whole, to the benefit of the community, local businesses and tourists alike.
