The vision for the project is threefold:
- Restore the buildings for commercial and community use, creating jobs and an education centre
- Create a community space around the buildings including a new station and multi modal interchange and car park
- Install green energy generation including a hydro-electric turbine in the river Ebbw to power the buildings, and a ground-source heating plant that will heat the buildings
This application is focused on the hydro-electric project, which will see the existing River Ebbw culvert running through the site (which is in need of repair) removed/upgraded and a low-head hydro turbine installed at the southern end of the site to generate electricity for the site buildings and export to the grid. It is further planned to install a mine water source heating plant on the site, using the artesian warm water arising within the old mine shafts to provide a network heating system for the site and adjacent buildings.
