Digital Reading Project 2018 Urdd Eisteddfod

This project will create a digital (web-based) platform to support a short series of stories featuring the childrens character Mistar Urdd. The stories will be aimed at early readers and primary school aged second-language speakers. Two of the books will also be produced in print and distributed in local schools to promote both the project itself and the 2018 Urdd Eisteddfod, to be held in Llanelwedd next May.

The project aims to fulfil two needs in the area:

  1. Supporting non Welsh-speaking parents to read in Welsh with their children. Using digital technology to appeal to young people and to reach a wider audience. The technology will help parents to be more confident when reading in Welsh with their child, whether the child is accessing Welsh medium education or not.
  2. Introducing families in the area to the work of Urdd Gobaith Cymru to enable more young people to access their provision and enjoy socialising through the Welsh language. This is particularly important in 2018 as the Urdd Eisteddfod comes to south Powys for the first time in 40 years. Many teachers and parents are unfamiliar with the wider work of the movement; this is an excellent way to encourage engagement.
