Energy Local Opportunities

Background: Energy Local is a new approach to distribute renewable energy generation that matches local generation to demand. It is currently being trialled in Bethesda and will be rolled out during 2018 to many communities across the UK. Energy Local increases generator income (helping to overcome the impact of Feed In Tariff reductions) and can reduce electricity bills by up to 25%. The objective of this project is to ensure Powys communities are ready to take advantage of the Energy Local approach to support local generation and tackle fuel poverty. Outcomes:

  • The project will analyse existing and potential community scale renewable generation sites across Powys using publically accessible data e.g. planning applications.
  • We will produce clear maps of the locations and boundaries for locations where Energy Local Clubs (ELCs), can be established to match local demand and generation using the power distribution network infrastructure. Where an initial assessment identifies suitable generation and domestic consumption within the same section of the distribution grid, a community group within that area will be contacted to begin discussion on the potential to form an ELC.
