Keith Norris

After 20 years of business/man management experience, from product development, through manufacturing to retail, in the 90’s I moved into the Renewable Industry just as the Wind Energy started to become a real option and sustainable alternative to fossil fuel.
I learnt to adapt and evolve with the increasing challenges of political uncertainty, complex project developments, technology advances and commercial imperatives, whilst always working within evermore demanding regulation and the diverse customs & practices of different geographic markets.
I had various roles including business administration, project management, construction and O&M. From 2001 for 5 years I lived and worked in the USA, beginning with a new business start-up for the construction and operation of a real landmark project (the King Mountain Wind Ranch - 214 turbines, 278MW) in Texas, at the time the largest wind project in the World, all completed and operational in 9months, ahead of deadline and significantly under budget.
In all I had direct involvement in over 1.3GW of installed generation and something approaching a further 2GW of projects in development across the World, with project values from £10 to £300 million.
Finally, 9 years before retirement, I worked in procurement in the UK, latterly with responsibility for Balance of Plant across EMEA.
Over the years I have worked with groups, large and small, from Senior management down, always with the aim of maintaining reputation while developing efficient and professional working teams to provide best value for invested time and money.  Mentoring was an integral part of that journey.

Business top-tip

Find your passion and learn how best to communicate your business proposition to others.  In fact, never stop developing your skills and read, read, read to research and build upon your experiences.  Don’t worry what others think but seek positive mentors to test your ideas and help resolve conflicts or any confusions, good mentoring can save valuable time and wasted effort.  Never be afraid to take risks or fail.  Failure happens to everyone at some stage in any business development, how you deal with it and learn from the experience is a measure of your tenacity and character.  Wherever possible leave a margin for safety when creating a competitive advantage or taking the next step forward. Be a leader but never stop being a team player.
