Rod (ney) Smith

From an initial role within a scientific environment where I developed research and analytical skills, my career evolved with an opportunity to create and develop a Training Department within a highly unionised continuous production environment.

This initial foray into the ‘people function’ created a significant change in career aspirations that resulted in progression to a senior functional and operational role with a multi-national organisation.

After several years in this role, an opportunity became available for the family to take on a business venture that presented domestic and commercial advantages within a village community. During this time, contacts were established that evolved into business ventures culminating in consultancy activities to a range of SME businesses, primarily UK but some European involvement.

A change in circumstances resulted in the prospect to upgrade my academic achievements to an Honours Degree This was part funded by casual / part time employment  including working at the College (Coleg Gwent – Newport & Cross Keys). On graduation, an offer of full time employment was made which evolved into a permanent position with specific responsibility for management courses, higher education, and Licencing Law training. Academically, the achievement of Post-Graduate, Masters and technical qualifications has contributed to further professional development.

Following a major restructure at the college, the opportunity for (slightly early) retirement with enhanced package was taken in 2015, but after a couple of months, created a data management company with a business colleague. Working in a highly competitive environment, we developed the business into a significant player in the market and traded until we received a generous offer for the business. Retirement option taken, after a few months recreated management consultancy providing range of services to SME’s, including the college. As a direct result of the pandemic, again option to retire taken.
