Rhydeden Project Update July 2024
The project started in January 2024 with a process called GeneEze testing offered through NMR. The tissue sampling unit (TSU) is used for the best results and accuracy, the TSU allows the farmer to take a tiny ear notch from any animal of any age, using either standalone TSU or as part of the official tag pair.
The genotype is then generated by DNA extraction and processing at the NMR lab. The data from the DNA extraction and processing is then submitted to AHDB Dairy and Egenes, who generate individual genomic evaluation data focussed on health, production, fertility, SCI and type via the herd genetic reports.
GeneEze test was carried out on the 15 of the 11-month-old R1’s youngstock dairy replacements in January. The following process was followed:
- Eurof tagged the R1 heifers in January 2024
- Samples were sent by post to NMR for analysis
- The farmer received their Genomic data for 8 of the R1 heifers within a few weeks, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1: Genomic results to date compared to the Holstein Friesian data
Unfortunately, the other 7 were higher in crossbred blood which means that it was not possible to receive genomic evaluation for these heifers until later in 2024. A further, 102 samples will be sent from the other heifers this Autumn so they are included in the genomic evaluations when available.
Following result analysis, it will allow the farmer the option to sell the lowest ranked genomically tested calves as surplus heifers, and will aid decisions on bull selection ahead of breeding for spring 2026 calving; start of breeding will take place on the first of May 2025.
Genetic merit for the groups of heifers selected by genomics can be compared to the average for previous heifers selected along with the predicted benefits in milk production and other traits.
