Measuring biodiversity & wildlife at Fferm Penllyn: Identifying positive farming practices and areas for further improvement

Fferm Penllyn is a 75-hectare tenant farm nestled on the edge of the town of Tywyn, Meirionnydd, where they raise both beef and sheep, producing high-quality red meat. The family has been running the farm since taking over the tenancy in 1998. Central to their philosophy is a commitment to working in harmony with nature, recognising that profitable food production is essential for farmers to continue their vital role in environmental stewardship. This dedication has been acknowledged through awards for their work in conservation and promotion of wildlife, such as lapwings.

As a new member of the Our Farms network, Alun Wyn Evans and the family at Fferm Penllyn will embark on a project to measure the biodiversity and wildlife present on the farm. This initiative will not only identify the farming practices that have led to wildlife thriving, showcasing the positive contributions of red meat agriculture to the ecosystem, but also pinpoint areas for further improvement. The project aims to demonstrate how sustainable and profitable farming, particularly in the red meat sector, is crucial for maintaining and enhancing our natural environment, and to inspire other farms to adopt these beneficial practices.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Maintaining and enhancing the resilience of ecosystems
  • Conserving and enhancing landscapes and the historic environment
  • Maximising carbon sequestration & storage
  • High animal health & welfare
