Why Bryn would be an effective mentor
- As a first-generation tenant farmer from a business background, Bryn tries to apply a different perspective to agriculture and diversification. He enjoys listening to people, and working with them to challenge and test ideas and opportunities.
- Having founded various brands in unique sectors of industry, Bryn enjoys the challenge of thinking outside the box and creating new potential avenues for Welsh agriculture.
- Bryn has been through the complicated – and often highly competitive – process of tendering for a council-owned farm, and understands the challenges faced as a new entrant trying to take their first steps into farming.
- During his time in franchising, Bryn developed his skillset to be able to analyse business operations. Taking time to understand the business owner’s skill sets and goals to work towards a plan for the future proved beneficial experience when completing the Agri Academy Business and Innovation challenge on a diverse farm.
- Bryn is a strong advocate for the sheep dairy industry as a sustainable and profitable means for small family farms to earn a living. Already assisting several other start-up enterprises to enter sheep dairy, he enjoys working with farmers from the idea stage to milking their first sheep. His goal is to establish the first Welsh dairy cooperative, to help grow and support this emerging sector.
- Bryn admits he still has more to learn, but he enjoys developing himself and his enterprise through shared experiences and visiting as many other farms as possible. Part of the NFU Cymru Next Generation group, Bryn is always looking towards the future and collaborating with talented and ambitious farmers.
Current farm business
- Flock of around 120 East Friesian-cross dairy ewes – working towards a breed suitable for the Welsh climate.
- Herd of 17 alpacas, which ‘guard’ the new lambs and have a ready market for their fleeces.
- Having set up collaborations with a number of similarly ambitious farmers in west Wales, Bryn and his partner, both in their early 30s, are now processing milk into a range of speciality Welsh ewes’ milk cheeses under their brand Ewenique Dairy, thanks to a range of support services from Farming Connect and Food Centre Wales.
- They have also launched ‘Ewenique Spirits’ – their own brand of ewe whey vodka.
