Host Farmers

  • Orsedd Fawr Demonstration Farm is run by Morris Gwyn Parry and his wife Delyth. They have four children, Morris Eifion aged 15, Cadi Elen 14, Robin Gwyn 12 and Guto Gwyn is the youngest at 11.

Land

  • The partnership farms 700 acres in total, 550 of which is owned and 150 acres is rented on a long term tenancy agreement.  
  • The land is divided between four parcels, all within eight miles from the main holding.
  • All the farmed land is part of the Glastir Organic scheme.

Livestock

 

Beef

  • The herd consists of 60 suckler cows, mainly Limosin cross, which calve from April to June.
  • Over the next few years the herd will slowly be turned into a Stabiliser herd by breeding their own replacements from Stabiliser bulls.
  • All cattle are finished and sold at 18–22 months of age.
  • All cattle are housed from mid-November to mid-March.

Sheep

  • 450 improved Welsh (Talybont) ewes and 200 ewe lambs.
  • Improved Welsh and Blue face sires are used, with all replacements home bred.
  • Lambing starts at the beginning of March, with ewes given no supplementary feeding in winter pre-lambing. The feeding regime post-lambing depends on the season, with some blocks fed occasionally if grass growth is slow.
  • All lambs are fattened and sold deadweight.

 
Cropping

  • One cut of grass silage is taken in mid-June, usually between 80 and 90 acres.

Additional information

  • The farm has diversified into holiday accommodation, with two self-catering cottages and a shepherd’s hut.
  • Solar PV Cells have been installed on the farm to provide renewable energy
