Crime Solvers Ltd was established in March 2015. Having retired from a 30-year career in policing I decided to use the knowledge and expertise I had obtained in the investigation of serious crimes to develop a business that would provide a unique and innovative vehicle to assist in the development of STEM subjects in schools.
I was inspired by a similar business but wanted to develop a model which was more authentic in respect of the materials and which provided an unique and entertaining learning experience
Marketing can be a tricky, especially getting your product noticed and persuading people of the value it can bring to their students. But I found that when I invested my time wisely and made personal visits to school, explaining the concept to Head teachers and developing personal relationships, it allowed me to gain the trust of schools and numerous endorsements which I’ve used to further market the business.
Being my own boss gives me flexibility. Having time to myself and family whilst being able to influence how my business continues to develop.
My advice would be - do your research into the potential demand for the business/product you want to establish as best you can. Ask people outside your immediate family and friends about the viability of your idea before investing money in it. Take advantage of the training opportunities and advice available in Wales to support new/young entrepreneurs. I really value the support I obtained from Business In Focus before taking the plunge!
