Capital Law has experienced exponential growth since it was created, in 2006. Over 150 people work here, half of which are qualified lawyers. Many have joined us from the most reputable firms in the UK, and all are committed to delivering the highest standard of service while maintaining a good work-life balance. We’re headquartered in Cardiff, have an office in London, and help clients all over the world.
After working in long-established, formal, and expensive law firms for years, a couple of my fellow partners and I realised we could do things differently.
We wanted to create an alternative – a commercial law firm that could compete with the big City-based and international firms across Europe, but which would be proudly based in Wales.
In doing that, we felt we could achieve two things: a different working culture, where people can be themselves, and greater cost-efficiency.
John Loosemore, Founder and Senior Partner at Loosemore Solicitors inspired me. He was my principal when I was training and was always years ahead of his time.
The best thing about being my own boss is that we never really are; the business grows into an organisation full of intelligent people, and we’re all accountable to one another.
The financial crash of 2009, just three years after we started off, was a big blow. It wiped out half of our turnover. We decided to protect our biggest asset, our people, by keeping everyone together in the business. This was the best decision we ever made.
My top tip to young entrepreneurs is find people who share your vision, but who bring different ideas.
