Data-driven analysis of lamb mortality
This project aims to obtain an understanding of the main causes of lamb mortality at Cornwal Uchaf. By identifying the specific periods and causes of losses, the farm can implement targeted interventions to the breeding and management cycle.
The family at Cornwal Uchaf will undertake a detailed, systematic recording of every lamb loss throughout the lambing period. The Lamb Losses Record Sheet will be used to log the information, from initial scanning numbers through to the post-weaning stage.
Tracking this data will facilitate the rapid pinpointing of key periods where mortality is highest, including:
- Neonatal losses (within the first few days of life)
- Pre-12 weeks losses (before first drench)
- Weaning and post-weaning losses
This evidence-based approach will enable the farm to establish definitive goals for improving management protocols, health plan or feeding strategy, ensuring that future actions are both targeted and effective.
Furthermore, this data-driven approach directly supports the core Sustainable Land Management (SLM) outcomes:
- Contributing to high flock health and welfare.
- resource efficiency
- reduce the farm’s greenhouse gas emissions
