Siân Downes
Aberaeron, Ceredigion
Sian Downes’s interest in sheep has been evident in her career path this far.
An Agriculture and Animal Science graduate from Harper Adams University, Sian is a keen Poll Dorset breeder who enjoys attending events and society sales.
She currently works as a trainee sales representative for Wynnstay. She has gained experience working on several farms throughout the UK and in New Zealand and worked for 2 years as a Shepherd to King Charles’ 3000-ewe flock at the Sandringham Estate.
Outside of agriculture Sian enjoys staying active by playing football for Tregaron and running with Aberaeron running club.
The family’s farming business, located in Penuwch and Aberaeron currently houses a flock of 150 Poll Dorset sheep with plans to reduce ewe numbers in order to concentrate on the dairy herd which currently sits at 240, primarily Friesian crossbred cows, selling milk to First Milk.
There are also opportunities to diversify into tourism, with outbuildings suitable for holiday lets in Aberaeron and given the location opportunities to add glamping pods, safari tents or shepherd huts.
Sian is keen to use the Agri Academy to develop plans for additional income streams.
Sian sees her participation in the Agri Academy as a chance to build connections with industry members that will not only give her more confidence when talking to experts, but also provide valuable insights which can positively impact their business back home.
