Eryl P Roberts
MEIRIONNYDD
Eryl Roberts, or Eryl P as he’s known locally, is Farming Connect’s development officer for Meirionnydd.
Eryl has farmed at Tŷ Mawr Eidda, Padog, Betws y Coed, a National Trust hill farm, which he farms organically, since 1986. He has a flock of Welsh Mountain sheep and a small herd of pedigree Dexter suckler cows.
Eryl is a keen advocate of Glastir, the Welsh Government’s environmental scheme and says that planting and layering hedges, rebuilding extensive lengths of stone walling and improving fencing has helped him manage his farm more efficiently by improving boundaries and creating better cover for stock.
Active in his local community, Eryl served as clerk to Ysbyty Ifan Community Council for 23 years and was one of the founding members of Nant Conwy Rugby Club. He is a member of Coleg Glynllifon’s council; the Welsh Council of the International Sheep Dog Society; is secretary of the National Trust Tenants’ Association; chairman of Nant Conwy Shepherds and a committee member of Snowdonia National Park Access Forum. He’s also keen to encourage the next generation into farming through his involvement with Eryri YFC.
“My role with Farming Connect combined with my busy community life gives me plenty of opportunities to speak to farmers in my area. It’s rewarding to know that I can often help them with any issues or concerns they might have. There’s so much support and advice available on a very wide range of topics ranging from improving the quality of soil and animal health issues to business and financial planning.
Eryl, who can often be spotted in Dolgellau and Bala marts, also runs discussion groups which supports the beef and sheep sectors in Meirionnydd.
