Trialling the establishment of perennial horticulture crops for business diversification

Parc y Dderwen is a 12 acre off-grid farm and food business in Llangolman in North Pembrokeshire. They specialise in a range of naturally fermented and raw sauerkrauts and kimchi made using ingredients predominantly grown in their no dig ecological market garden. Products are all made on site in their own processing kitchen in a timber frame barn, powered by solar PV. In addition, they grow a variety of seed crops for local seed companies Real Seeds and the Wales Seed Hub and sell wholesale garlic plaits locally.

This trial will explore the establishment of perennial culinary, medicinal and soft fruit perennial crops to seek out alternative routes to market for the business. We will monitor and report on ground cultivation, planting, establishment, weeding and pest management throughout the season, and how to prepare perennial beds for overwinter to guarantee a healthy crop the following year.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Resilient Ecosystems
  • Resource Efficiency
