Huw Thomas
Llanspyddid, Brecon
Brought up on a beef and sheep farm in Bannau Brycheiniog, Huw Thomas is now balancing life as a structural engineer with a growing role back on the family farm. Having not taken the traditional agricultural route, Huw’s passion for farming, sparked during the Covid-19 lockdowns when he returned to the family farm and recognised the meaningful contribution he could make.
Having graduated from Swansea University with an MEng in Civil Engineering, Huw now works on major infrastructure projects across the country.
Once a passionate rugby player, Huw now channels his competitive spirit into golf, cricket and padel.
Huw has had an entrepreneurial drive from a young age - fixing phones, selling firewood and launching ‘Huw’s Hut’, a shepherd’s hut diversification project. He’s always enjoyed turning ideas into action.
He recognises that he has a huge amount to learn but is excited by the opportunity to play a meaningful role in sustainable food production and the future of the farm. Huw’s focus for the business is improving efficiency, supporting intergenerational succession, and exploring viable diversification to ensure long-term resilience.
“The Agri Academy offers a unique opportunity to learn from others, challenge myself, and make valuable connections. It will allow me to gain much-needed industry exposure and see how successful farming businesses operate.”
