Investigating the benefits of variable rate nitrogen applications in winter wheat and winter oilseed rape

This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of variable rate nitrogen application in winter wheat and oilseed rape, using satellite imagery to create precise fertilisation plans. Inspired by successful preliminary use, the farmer wants to compare yields and profit margins against traditional "flat rate" applications to justify the technology's adoption. The core objective is to produce high-yielding, consistent, and profitable crops. Beyond measurable yield and profit, the project also anticipates additional benefits like reduced nutrient runoff, better lodging control, improved tillering, and overall healthier, more even crops. All yield data will be precisely measured using the farm's weighbridge at harvest.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Clean water
  • Reduced GHG emissions
  • Resource efficient
