Start to Farm: Work placement at Glwydcaenewydd Farm

Farm type: Organic beef and sheep 300-acre farm
Working hours: 8:00am - 4:30pm, maybe a weekend once a month

Salary: £12.41 / hour (or equivalent National Living Wage for age)
Contract: 6 - 12-week work placement

Job description 

This is an exciting placement opportunity for a new entrant to gain skills and knowledge and build experience by working on a farm that is very diverse from tourism, livestock, busy changeovers, hedging and fencing. This would suit an ambitious individual who wants to gain some valuable livestock and diversification experience and learn on the job.

Farm facts

  • 50 suckler stabiliser cows and calves to finish
  • 500 lowland ewes
  • Grass based system
  • 120ha grazing platform
  • Lambing from mid-February / March 2026

Your role

On this placement, your roles and responsibilities will include: 

  • Assisting the farm manager with daily management of the herd and flock ensuring animal welfare is your top priority
  • Working with the farm manager to maintain records, ensuring data is kept up to date and used to benefit the herd’s wellbeing
  • Treating & identifying illnesses and informing the farm manager of any observations
  • Basic tractor and machine operation
  • Keeping the farm overall tidy & safe to operate
  • General farm maintenance & fencing

Day to day assistance needed with changeovers – cleaning, linen change, servicing hot tubs, home maintenance and booking systems with Heidi-May

It is essential that you: 

  • Are reliable with good timekeeping, who is passionate about stock welfare
  • Possess the ability to be proactive and take initiative
  • Have excellent communication skills and the desire to uphold positive work relationships
  • Enjoy being on the farm and have a progressive outlook on farming and diversification
  • Have a positive attitude towards learning

It would be desirable if you: Have a full driving licence
