Focus Site Project: Efficient Dry Cow Nutrition and Land Use
Housing and predominantly feeding suckler cows over the winter has a dramatic effect on the enterprise’s profitability.
Project aims:
- The aim of this project will be to evaluate the dry cow diet which is currently completely silage based.
- Gwion Owen believes that his current feeding regime of adlib silage results in cows gaining too much condition throughout the winter period as they are all weaned when housed.
- Undertaking a cost evaluation of the current dry cow diet and exploring other options will allow him to possibly reduce forage cost.
