I left school and started as an apprentice in the Steelworks at Corus where I worked for seven years. I then went on to work for various small engineering companies and became involved in engineering management.

I moved on to production management and worked for various businesses, focusing on fire alarms and electronics.

"Definitely consider it - self-employment is one of the better options now. Always look for help, because there’s help out there. Don’t be afraid, particularly at that age, because you’ve got nothing to lose."

Terry Crump - Crazy 18 Golf

My business was established in 2004, when I designed a portable crazy golf game.

Our customers are based mainly in the UK and we sell our product largely through catalogues.

I’d always wanted to start my own business, so when the opportunity arose, I took it.

I feel satisfaction being my own boss – the process of getting a product from a concept in your head into shops and outlets - that brings great satisfaction.

The biggest challenge is the worry of failing – and having to grow your sales and grow the company. The challenge early on was developing the product itself lately the challenge is to grow the company with sales.
