Bryn Farm Facts

Bryn Demonstration Farm is a 101-hectare (ha) holding operating as a beef farm where fourth generation farm Huw Jones and his wife, Meinir, also grow 24ha of wheat, oats and barley as feed for their herd.

They are supported by part-time staff.

The soil at Bryn is a light sandy loam.

The farm rise to 400 feet, with fields overlooking Cardigan Estuary at the highest point.

Seventy-five suckler cows, mostly Salers, calve in a 10-week block from February 1.

The main stock bull is a Charolais with excellent breeding figures; a Hereford bull is used to produce replacement heifers.

Cattle are sold as stores at livestock markets.

The herd is run on a paddock grazing system.

Rape, turnips or kale are planted following cereals for grazing as winter fodder crops.

All winter housing is loose-housing.

Hay and straw are produced for the pet industry with hay grown from specialist seed mixes and these fields then used as deferred winter grazing for dry cows.

All silage is made into big bales, approximately 350 bales are made annually together with some hay bales.
