A Collaborative mobility Project to Combat Lameness

The project is all about tackling one of the most pressing issues facing dairy farmers in Wales: cow lameness. It's a challenge that impacts more than just an animal's comfort; it affects their productivity, their lifespan, and even the financial stability of the farm. With around 30% of the national herd experiencing lameness at any given time, the need for effective solutions is clear.

This project is about more than just treating symptoms; it's about fostering a deeper understanding of the causes of lameness, exploring the most effective prevention methods, and mastering the best treatment options.

Led by lameness expert Sara Pedersen, and Anna Bowen, Anderson the group consists of 5 dedicated dairy farms. Through a series of focused meetings – both one-on-one and farm-hosted group sessions – farmers will gain valuable insights and work together to create practical, farm-specific action plans. We'll be tracking key data, from lesion counts to mobility scores, to truly understand the impact of our efforts.

We're also embracing modern communication with a dedicated social media group, encouraging open discussion and allowing vets and foot trimmers to share their expertise. This project aligns directly with the Welsh government's Strategic Action Plan for dairy, aiming to provide comprehensive advice, promote animal health and welfare, and support collaborative ventures within the industry.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Achieving and promoting high standards of animal health and welfare
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
