Enhancing lamb productivity and profitability through optimized cobalt supplementation

This project aims to boost lamb productivity and farm profitability by addressing common cobalt deficiency in lambs. This initiative will directly compare two different B12 cobalt injection treatments, meticulously measuring their impact on lamb health through daily weight gain (DLWG) and body condition score (BCS). Beyond the biological effects, the project includes a crucial economic analysis, comparing treatment costs, including product price and farm labour, to demonstrate how each option can enhance overall farm profitability. Ultimately, this study will provide practical, data-driven advice to lamb farmers, enabling them to make informed decisions about cobalt supplementation for healthier lambs, increased productivity, and stronger farm finances

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • High Animal Health and Welfare
  • Reduced GHG emissions
  • Resource efficient
