Graianfryn Project Update - December 2024
What has been done to date?
- Calf Housing System Progress
- The second batch of calves are currently going through the new housing system, which is designed to improve animal welfare and reduce antibiotic use.
- Vet review of the system confirmed that there were no issues or necessary changes, highlighting the effectiveness of the current setup.
- Graianfryn has maintained a zero mortality rate in the new housing system to date, demonstrating its success in supporting calf health.
- Calf Enrichment Monitoring
- Ongoing monitoring of calf enrichment methods, comparing the use of Buoy/ball hung on a rope versus Bitestar with a chain.
- The goal is to identify which enrichment method encourages more positive behaviour and overall wellbeing.
- Environmental Adjustments
- Bunkers at the back of the pens, which were originally used for added warmth, have been removed due to calves becoming too hot in these areas.
- This adjustment ensures a more stable and comfortable temperature within the pens for optimal calf growth and health.
Next Steps - Continue monitoring calf health and behaviour, with regular vet reviews.
- Assess the effectiveness of the calf enrichment methods and adjust as needed.
- Ensure that environmental conditions remain comfortable for the calves, particularly with temperature control.
