Evaluating field scale sphagnum moss cultivation techniques

This project will assess two Sphagnum moss planting methods—cell tray planting and liquid spraying of chopped moss—on a previously uncultivated field, also evaluating the impact of covering trial beds versus leaving them exposed. The primary goal is to determine optimal conditions for Sphagnum growth by monitoring soil water levels and pH, with key objectives including comparing establishment success of the two methods, assessing the influence of covers on moss growth, and identifying scalable cultivation techniques. Drawing guidance from UK moorland restoration efforts, this trial aims to develop a sustainable peat alternative from Wales for horticultural applications.

The project will also contribute to the Sustainable Land Management outcomes including:

  • Resource efficient
  • Maximise carbon storage
