Lucy Owens
Ruthin, Denbighshire
Lucy Owens grew up on her family’s farm in Leicestershire. Married to an accountant who works with a local farmers’ auction, Lucy hopes to grow her small flock of sheep and also helps out with her father in law’s flock.
Mum to three young children, Lucy juggles her time between family duties, helping out with the sheep, her role as a bookkeeper for the family accounting business and quite a few other things! In April she launched her clothing brand, I Care Clothing which supports rural and countryside charities and organisations and she is also show secretary for the Llanrhaeadr Sheepdog and Show Society.
After attending Nottingham Trent University where she obtained her National Certificate in Agriculture, she went on to read for her BSc in Agriculture with Marketing at Aberystwyth University. Her previous roles involved her working in procurement for a large abattoir and as an account manager for a major feed supplier where she advised on feed rations and promoting the company products.
“Since having my children, I am much more conscious about the food we eat, where it comes from and of shopping locally to support Welsh producers. This is what spurred me on to start my blog and ‘This Mum Cares’ page which covers food, farming and family life.
“I hope being part of the Rural Leadership Programme will introduce me to people who have succeeded within their chosen fields, which will inspire me to focus on the issues which matter to me, learn new skills and meet new networks of mentors and like-minded individuals.
