Reducing the prevalence of pneumonia in young calves can improve performance and therefore the profitability of calf rearing enterprises. Join Farming Connect for an evening at one of its Focus Sites to learn more about disease prevention and how improved building design and ventilation can help address respiratory disease issues.

There will be an update on the Farming Connect project at Llindir which is aiming to improve daily liveweight gains by determining the true extent of pneumonia cases in young calves at the indoor calf rearing enterprise. As part of the project, each animal is examined and given a pneumonia score, which helps reduce antibiotic use and detect infection earlier. Adding probiotics to milk as a preventative measure is also being explored, as are changes in management and installing positive ventilation systems.

Vet Dai Grove White, of the University of Liverpool, and independent vet Sarah Pederson will also discuss the true cost of pneumonia, treatment and prevention options, along with building design and ventilation.
