Farming Connect is now offering a new, fully funded, Lantra-accredited animal health and welfare training workshop called ‘The Thin Ewe – Investigation and Management’. This valuable training, focusing on key animal health and welfare issues, will be delivered by approved local vet practices across Wales.

These workshops are designed to equip participants with essential skills in sheep health and management.

Attending the workshop will give attendees a better understanding of various causes of poor condition in ewes and how it impacts their health, fertility, production, and welfare. You'll learn how to Body Condition Score ewes effectively, with guidance given on how to approach issues with ewe condition and reasons as to why it’s important to do body condition score regularly.

A key focus will be on the five 'iceberg diseases' and their preventative measures. You'll also learn to monitor flock body condition using measurable parameters, knowing when intervention is needed.

There will be an opportunity to look into the importance of strict biosecurity, detailing essential measures to prevent the introduction of iceburg diseases, or other diseases and parasites into healthy flocks.

The training workshop covers the many causes of poor condition in ewes. You'll learn effective strategies for correcting existing issues and preventing new ones, and gain the ability to identify associated risk factors within your flock.

‘I consider maintaining an appropriate ewe body condition score to be a fundamental driver for having productive and healthy ewes within a flock. This new workshop looking at the causes of thin ewes will allow us to open up this subject with our farm clients, identifying strategies for control and future prevention.’ agrees Gareth Mulligan, Afon Vets

Workshop attendance will be logged on the attendee's 'Storfa Sgiliau' CPD record along with a Lantra Awards 'certificate of attendance'.

The training workshops are fully funded but to qualify for that funding all attendees must be registered with Farming Connect and complete a Personal Development Plan (PDP).

For dates and details of upcoming workshops visit the Farming Connect website or contact your local development officer to find out more.
